Holloway
For many of the women in Holloway Prison's young offenders wing, the focus of the second episode in a well-made and thoughtful series, incarceration provides a strange form of stability. Strange for anyone who's grown up loved and secure, that is, but not for young women who have suffered hellish childhoods. Some don't want to leave when they've completed their sentences. For one young woman who before prison had problems with alcohol, Holloway has meant for the first time ever a structured life - she knows where her next meal is coming from and that every night she will sleep somewhere safe. Sadly, her anxieties bring on a particularly savage bout of self-harming. With almost painful inevitability, her story doesn't end happily when she's met, on her release from Holloway, by a friend who brings her bottles of vodka and beer.
