Mistresses
It's the final episode of the series and the women have much to think about. For instance, Siobhan (Orla Brady) can't understand why her husband Hari wants a divorce after finding out that she picked up strangers in hotel bars for sex. Hmm, tough one. Then there's Katie (Sarah Parish), the world's least observant doctor, who lives in a house made entirely of glass: she kisses her boss/ex-lover in public at work, then is shocked when she's spotted by her current boyfriend and he dumps her. Who'd have thought it? Still, though Mistresses is possibly the most witless drama in the history of television, it's hard to dislike, mainly because you know exactly where you are with it. Thus I guarantee that this last instalment will yet again live down to your expectations, as it did mine, when we must say goodbye to a glossy world of coloured tights, gorgeous glass lamp-bases and terrible dialogue. The Apprentice
Can a recession dull the mood of the nation's favourite business show? Will the credit crunch sap any of the red-blooded capitalism from the series' veins? Not a bit of it. This year's hard-faced hopefuls looking for a job with Sir Alan Sugar are as cocksure as ever, introducing themselves with remarks like "For me, making money is better than sex" and "You don't need to make friends on the way up if you're not coming down". It's good to have them back, isn't it? The candidates' first task is to set up a cleaning business, but first there are the team names to choose (Carpe Diem, Strike and Shazam are among the rejects) and the ticklish question of who goes first to be project manager - a poisoned chalice the girls' team fall over themselves to avoid. Then the gears of the series start turning, a ruthless machine that sucks in confidence and turns it into fl ailing, animal fear. It shouldn't be a pleasure to watch, but it always is. Derailed
Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom makes his English language debut with this neo-noir thriller that boasts plenty of sharp turns. Sadly, screenwriter Stuart Beattie's (Collateral) plotting is all too predictable, as fellow commuters Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston) and Charles (Clive Owen) indulge in an extramarital flirtation. Apart from having zero chemistry, the circumstances under which the pair get talking seem contrived, and as a result all the Hitchcockian devices that follow are rendered futile. On top of that, the story fails to address Charles's mounting sense of guilt, after one night with Lucinda at a cheap hotel puts his family at risk. Instead of drama and suspense, there is a rapid descent into casual violence. At least Vincent Cassel has some fun, hamming it up as the pompous French thug who blackmails Charles over the affair, but otherwise there's nothing to buffer this wayward vehicle.

Alan Whicker's Journey of a Lifetime
Europe
"I've had the luckiest of lives," admits Alan Whicker here, as he casts his eye over a staggering TV career. Seeing the archive clips of him in Venice or St Moritz or John Paul Getty's mansion, it's hard to argue, although the real stroke of luck was arriving at a time when he could be the first to bring stories from bullfighting to plastic surgery to our screens. The only drawback was that his style worked so well that it became endlessly mockable on Monty Python and elsewhere. The earnest delivery has softened over the years, but the florid tendencies are still there ("My regrets haunt those old grey stones and these old grey bones," he muses on a Venetian bridge). You can forgive him the odd touch of nostalgia, given how well the original interviews stand up. Whicker had a gift for making people reveal themselves, from Getty to Robin Douglas-Home, whose aristocratic tears on camera while talking about his divorce are still touching. As greatest hits packages go, not many broadcasters could beat this. Radio Times reviewer - David Butcher

Firewall
Looking as old and exhausted as the dog-eared plot, Harrison Ford huffs and puffs his way through this flabby variation on The Desperate Hours with grafted on hi-tech trappings. The past-it action man plays a computer security specialist forced by psychopathic Paul Bettany to hack into his own bank to ensure the safety of his kidnapped wife (a wasted Virginia Madsen) and children. Once past the reasonably tense set-up, disbelief and boredom set in as Richard Loncraine's get-the-job-done direction does nothing to transcend the film's formula chase thrills and contrivances. If Bettany's gang has been scrupulously monitoring Ford's family for a year, why don't they know his bank has been taken over by another financial institution when they pounce? And surely the first rule of hostage taking must be: leave all family pets behind. But that would leave us without the ludicrous climax.

Holloway
For many of the women in Holloway Prison's young offenders wing, the focus of the second episode in a well-made and thoughtful series, incarceration provides a strange form of stability. Strange for anyone who's grown up loved and secure, that is, but not for young women who have suffered hellish childhoods. Some don't want to leave when they've completed their sentences. For one young woman who before prison had problems with alcohol, Holloway has meant for the first time ever a structured life - she knows where her next meal is coming from and that every night she will sleep somewhere safe. Sadly, her anxieties bring on a particularly savage bout of self-harming. With almost painful inevitability, her story doesn't end happily when she's met, on her release from Holloway, by a friend who brings her bottles of vodka and beer. Clough
His outspoken football punditry made Brian Clough a national figure in the 1970s. Although he was the most successful English manager of his generation, his appeal transcended the game and his often comic and sometimes cutting remarks endeared him to the nation. He said what he liked and you knew he'd go on saying it no matter what, so he was never going to get the England manager's job. Now, the fictional film based on Clough's short tenure at Leeds, The Damned United, is due for release on Friday. Here's a welcome reminder of the real man, drawing on ITV's rich archives. Contributors include his widow Barbara and son Nigel, who object to what they say is an inaccurate portrayal of Brian Clough in the book on which the film is based. Radio Times reviewer - Geoff Ellis

Notting Hill
The Four Weddings team produced another smash with this charming tale about a bumbling bookshop owner (Hugh Grant) who falls for the "most famous actress in the world" (Julia Roberts). Inevitably, the course of true love is a bumpy road, with friends, family and layabout flatmate Spike (played by Rhys Ifans in a career-making performance) getting in the way, but that's the cue for a series of screamingly funny scenarios. Saturated with wit and well directed by Roger Michell, the film was bashed by sceptics for its fluffiness and lack of realism (for a racially mixed area of London, there's not a black face to be seen). But, if you can accept the context as 100 per cent white middle class, with a light-hearted commentary on the nature of celebrity, it's an intensely enjoyable experience.

The Ex
The Fatal Attraction premise - deranged man/woman obsessively pursues reluctant partner - became a staple of the straight-to-video market. This is one of the better examples, even though it is still a slightly sordid slice of exploitation. Yancy Butler plays the unhinged ex-wife of architect Nick Mancuso, who wheedles her way back into his life by befriending his new wife, Suzy Amis. Butler is suitably over-the-top as the woman scorned, while the no-frills direction from accomplished B-movie director Mark L Lester (Commando, Night of the Running Man) ensures that the action never flags.

Cross of Iron
Director Sam Peckinpah switches from westerns such as The Wild Bunch to another kind of savagery - Germans in retreat on the Russian Front during the Second World War - and makes this as graphic an antiwar film as anything since All Quiet on the Western Front. In this adaptation of a book by Willi Heinrich, James Coburn plays the disillusioned sergeant, sickened by slaughter and the double dealings of officers such as Maximilian Schell. There's little room for women in Peckinpah's exercise in macho ideals, though an encounter with female guerrillas shows them exacting revenge with dreadful results. This is bloody action, elegantly choreographed to chilling effect.

In Enemy Country
This uninspired Second World War hokum from Universal utilised the studio's backlot when its TV series weren't in production. Still, star Tony Franciosa copes manfully, going undercover to dispose of a Nazi torpedo factory, and Anjanette Comer pouts prettily. British interest centres on import Tom Bell and the very artificial European setting. Producer/director Harry Keller does a serviceable job, however, and scores some points for effort.

Murphy's War
This trifle has hints of The African Queen, with Peter O'Toole as a manic Irish seaman who teams up with a Quaker missionary (O'Toole's then wife, Sian Phillips) and a French oil engineer (convincingly played by Philippe Noiret) to sink a German U-boat on the Orinoco delta. Shot in the jungles of Venezuela, the film's blend of whimsy and battle is skilfully handled by director Peter Yates, who was riding high at the time on the success of Bullitt.

Interests
The Gentle Sex
Viewed today, this drama seems unbearably patronising in its depiction of the contribution made to the war effort by seven socially diverse women who volunteer for service on the same day. But in its day, it served its purpose both as a morale booster and as a recruitment advertisement, thanks to some astute appeals to the patriotic spirit and some spunky acting. The top-notch cast includes Barbara Waring as a catty snob and Lilli Palmer as a timid German immigrant. Sadly, a week after the film was released, its co-director Leslie Howard was killed when his plane was shot down while he was on a secret mission to Portugal.

Heston's Roman Feast
Heston Blumenthal entreats us throughout the preparation of his ancient Roman feast, "Don't try this at home!" Don't worry, Heston, I won't. Fear not, pork scratchings made from pig's nipples, calf's brain custard and ejaculating puddings will never, ever cross my kitchen worktops. You can rely on it. Mind you, it's scintillating to watch Blumenthal work his magic, even if you find yourself gagging from time to time, as do the random members of the public he collars in the street to try his first attempt at brainy custard. Even the addition of rose petals doesn't make it any more appealing, or edible. But Blumenthal's artistry is beyond doubt and his guests, who include a delighted Alexander Armstrong and a beaming Marquess of Bath, are in raptures as course after decadent course arrives at their table. Be prepared for lots of ribaldry, as this is a "theatrical, deviant, orgiastic" feast. You have been warned. Radio Times reviewer - Alison Graham

Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing
Despite having one of the most famous romantic titles of all time, this soap opera's distinction rests largely with its hit title ballad and director Henry King's imaginative use of early CinemaScope, which captures stars Jennifer Jones and William Holden horizontal at every possible opportunity. Trouble is, both Jones and Holden fail to convince in this occasionally trite tale of forbidden love, which is a shame, because the source book by Han Suyin is actually very moving. Alfred Newman's Oscar-winning score makes stunning use of the main theme and may convince you that this tosh, a hugely popular success at the time, is better than it actually is.

Mama Spent Money When She Had None
After last week's detour, we're now (almost) back on track with the main stories. And - how topical - the recession has come to Wisteria Lane. It's hit the Scavos really hard: they've had to sell Tom's sports car, or as Lynette puts it, "Sadly we can't afford Tom's midlife crisis any more." She's also been spotted selling cans at the recycling centre, which, as Gaby points out, is "half a step away from selling your eggs on the internet". Even Susan is forced to get a new job (well, she can't make much from illustrating children's books - we've hardly ever seen her put pen to paper). Only Bree and Gaby are on a financial upswing, with one of them buying a flash new car and the other getting her glamorous self back. You can probably work out which is which. But the key moment comes when Tom finally learns that creepy Dave is not his friend. Far from it, in fact . . . Radio Times reviewer - Jane Rackham
